Sweeps Festival 2008

This turned out to be a busy weekend for us Spotted Cats. Friday night was spent in Nigel's Bar, where we did two spots in the Open mic. On Saturday we took part in the Folk Factor again (Barry Laing says "it's the law"). Douggie introduced as "Confident performers who are acheiving a cult following."Prior to that we did four songs on the Pigs Ear Stage at lunchtime, after listening to the first half from our mates, Norcsalordie's gig. On Sunday we thought we'd look in on Bob and Kathy. then go to see Triality. We ended up running the singaround as Kathy has scalded her arm, and broken some fingers on the same side.  Monday was divided between Hot Rats and Perfect Strangers. Came home and went to bed......yawn........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

TDL WILL REPLACE ROSA'S DAUGHTERS AS FRIDAY FOLK GUESTS ON MAY 16TH.

TONE DEAF LEOPARDFolkmob's "Glam Folk" Artists of the Year for the 2nd Consecutive Year.

Ben now performs solo and is progressing well. He has made it through to the Young Roots Competition in April.

Tone Deaf Leopard describe themselves as being the vanguard of the glam-folk movement. Being as they invented the genre, that is not surprising. TDL are: Trevor Little and Sue Tuckey. Sue has run Friday Folk since 1987 and has at last given herself a residency.Trevor's sons, James, 16 ,and a half, and Ben, 14, have at last picked up the guitar habit, and have played with us at one of our favourite clubs, Essex's famous Fab Club. They have also played at Orpington Liberal Club and  The Good Intent.

The Leopards are noted for dressing in leopardskin, and playing loud  acoustic guitar and unusual drumming. It seems to work though as they have acheived a cult following in several folk clubs including the prestigious Dartford Folk Club. They have "supported" Jez Lowe and Steve Tilston, and  Paul Downes. The Lepps play regularly at both Orpington clubs, Eltham, Grays, , Rochester (Good Intent P.H.).. Faversham, Knatts Valley. Croydon, and  Tunbridge Wells have not been spared either.   We have been spotted in Broadstairs, Rochester,Faversham, Markbeech, and Tenterden during Festivals.

To quote John Barden: "Be Afraid....be very afraid!"

Johnny (The Bear) Preston :"Tone Deaf Leopard....that's a cute name. I like it."

Martin Carthy "Scottish traditional songs to calypso rhythm? Why not? I wouldn't have thought of it, but I write my own tunes."

Liz Randall Travelling Folk "And now we have the Internationally famous Tone Deaf Leopard"

The T.D.L. website is now up and running. It has more photo's and and some lyrics.

T.D.L.

We've been together since May 2005. When we started out we had a handful of songs- mainly  other people's. We then brought some of Trevor's works into the act, then we started writing together. We may be noted for our wacky sense of humour, but we do come up with some more serious stuff now and again. We are endeavouring to learn more traditional songs, continuing the folk process by searching out long forgotton ballads from Buchan's text , and Child Ballads, and setting nineteenth century poems to music. (Some of the tunes have a calypso rhythm, it seems to work.)   Our cubs have now cut their performing teeth, and have been joining us for a song or two. We are now ready, willing, and able to offer our services to any club, or festival that fancy booking us. Singing with or without our trusty instruments, guitar, mandolin banjo, bodhrun, bongos, djembe, and various shaky and scratchy things, we can provide a varied evening's entertainment at a very reasonable price. .Our CD "8 by 2" is selling well and we've had to produce more . We've begun work on the 2nd one which will be a concept album. Watch this space! There is now a blog on the TDL website, all comments welcome, but they will be under review before posting.

Recently, we have had local folk legends accompanying us. Notably, backing vocals from Ian Petrie, and lead guitar from Steve Shorey. Neither would wear the leopardskin though! Wait til we're famous, then they'll be clamouring for it!

Tuesday March 25th. Tonight we sang at the Holy Of Holies itself - yes TDL has invaded Sharps. We possibly took it by storm - what a wonderful club!
